Fairbanks Youth Soccer Association

In partnership with the Eclipse Soccer Club, FYSA and the ESC 2008 Girls and ESC 2010 Boys teams will be hosting the ‘Let’s Make Some Goals! Back-to-School Tournament’ on Friday/Saturday August 23rd-24th. This tournament is open for all players born 2012 to 2005 (adult division scrapped due to low numbers).

Every age group will play in a 5v5 format (4 field players and a goalie). Teams will be co-ed, with a minimum of 1 players of each gender on the field at all times. All players will register individually, but you can form your own teams with just one team rep contacting FYSA with a player list and team name. Don’t have a team but still want to play? Not a problem. In registration you can indicate that you’re a ‘free agent’ and we work to get every player placed on a squad.

Registration is only $25 per player which gets you a minimum of 3 games and some tournament swag! The schedule will have all games taking place on Saturday 8/24 at the FYSA field complex.

In the spirit of our back-to-school theme, when you register for the ‘Let’s Make Some Goals!’ tournament, players will be asked to include a goal that they have for the upcoming school year. We’ll take all those entries and from them draw 2 winners (youth) who will have the option for a pizza party, ice cream or another similar reward for their class at any point in the coming semester.

There will be a lot of other aspects for the 'Let’s Make Some Goals! Back-to-School Tournament' as we approach the event, so stay tuned and check back here. As always, feel free to contact us with any questions at [email protected] or 907-456-3972

Tournament Rules (CLICK HERE to view rules as a single PDF)

One of the purposes for this tournament is to transition from outdoor to indoor soccer programs, which typically play 5v5 in smaller playing areas. Fields will be modified to accommodate this type of gameplay. Most ‘Laws of the Game’ will remain the same, but we’ll have a few modifications as outlined here:

Games are 30 minutes long, played as two 15-minute halves. The halftime period shall be no longer than 5 minutes. Each half begins with a kickoff like a normal soccer match.

Subbing will take place ‘on the fly’, meaning teams do not need to wait for a stoppage of play, nor do they need the referee’s permission to make a substitution (exception would be changing goalkeeper).

Games are played as 5v5. Each team must field a goalie at all times. Teams are permitted to play with only 4 players. Additionally, each team must have both genders present on the field at all times (i.e. min. of 1 player of each gender).  If circumstances make this impossible (player injury, missing players, etc.), this guideline may be modified or exempted with the approval of the referee or Tournament Directors. Teams found to be ignoring this guideline for the purpose of winning may have their ‘points’ reduced. While we cannot police every minute of every match, we encourage everyone to follow the spirit of this fun event with good sportsmanship

Throw-ins, corner kicks, kick-offs and free kicks all take place as normal. However, when the ball goes out for a ‘goal kick’ the goalkeeper will not place the ball on the ground but instead release it with their hands (roll, throw, bounce, etc.). This is just like its done in indoor soccer and referred to as a ‘Goal Clearance’. At no point may the goalie release the ball over the halfway line without it first touching the ground or another player (although during regular live play, the goalie can act like any other player).

In front of each goal is a designated Goal Area. NO attacking player may make contact with the ball inside the Goal Area. This is to reduce the chances of injuries for this fun event. If an attacking player touches the ball in this area, the referee will blow the whistle and play will restart with a Goal Clearance.

Because no attacking player may touch the ball inside the Goal Area, there are no real situations that should result in a typical Penalty Kick. However, fouls and other infractions that would normally result in a free kick will stay occur as needed and defending players shall observe the required 10-yard distance for free kicks. ALL free kicks will be considered Indirect Free Kicks for the tournament (meaning the ball must touch another player before entering the goal for it to count).

There will be NO Offside rules for the tournament. Play smart!

While there is no ‘Mercy Rule’, teams will only be awarded/assessed a 10-goal differential for the purposes of team standings. If a team wins 15-3, they will receive their 3 points for the win and a +10 in their ‘Goals For’ stat, the same for the losing team only being assessed a -10. As such, if a game seems lopsided, any team who has ‘solidified their win’ is encouraged to make the remainder of the match as enjoyable as possible for all involved.

For all divisions, games can end in a tie (unless listed as a Semifinal or Final). Standings are tracked as 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 0 points for a loss. In the event of a tie in points when a seed position needs to be determined, a tie-breaker process will be applied in the following order: head-to-head, goal differential (difference of all goals scored minus all goals against), goals-for, goals-against, and finally if all else a coin flip (best 2 of 3) performed by the Tournament Coordinator.

For games that must have a winner but end in a tie, we will play an additional, full 5 minutes of overtime. If after 5 minutes have passed and the score is still tied, the next goal wins.

This tournament is meant to be heavy on smiles and sportsmanship and light on fouls and frowns. THANK YOU to all the volunteers who help make this event possible. Any questions or concerns should be directed to the Tournament Directors (Kathie or Colt) who will be onsite.

Division Schedules

Here you'll find the individual division schedules and brackets/standings with specific notes if applicable.

For all divisions, games can end in a tie (unless listed as a Semifinal or Final). Standings are tracked as 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie and 0 points for a loss. In the event of a tie in points when a seed position needs to be determined, a tie-breaker process will be applied in the following order: head-to-head, goal differential (difference of all goals scored minus all goals against), goals-for, goals-against, and finally if all else a coin flip (best 2 of 3).

Games that must have a winner but end in a tie. For these situations, we will play an additional, full 5 minutes of overtime. If after 5 minutes have passed and the score is still tied, the next goal wins.

Red Division
There are 6 teams. Instead of one of the funky set-ups where you make two brackets of 3 and there is complicated cross-play, all 6 teams will play eachother once. The top 4 teams will play a semifinal round with the winners squaring off for a final.

Green Division
There are only 3 teams in the Green division. Sometimes tournaments will approach this with teams each playing eachother, then the top team getting a 'bye' into the final, the other two playing a single semi, then the winner playing the top seed. But whew, that is a mess. Instead, we want all 3 groups of players to get equal game time while still having some competition. As such, all 3 teams will play eachother TWICE. The top team in the standings will be the winner for the division!
